ألا أبلغْ أبا كَرِبٍ رسولا

ألا أبلغْ أبا كَرِبٍ رسولا

مُغَلْغَلَةً وليستْ بالمُزاحِ

Hear this: convey to Abu Karib a message,

Shall I convey to the father of sorrows a messenger

borne far afield, and no jest.

Gurgling, and this is no jest,

فَإِني لنْ يفارِقَني دُباسٌ

فَإِني لنْ يفارِقَني دُباسٌ

ومُطَّرَدٌ أَحَذُّ من الرّماحِ

ومُطَّرَدٌ أَحَذُّ من الرّماحِ

For Dubas will not leave me,

That never shall a coat of mail leave me,

nor a straight-shafted spear, light and swift.

And urged on am I, sharper than a lance's point.

يُراخيني إذا ما شئتُ منهمْ

يُراخيني إذا ما شئتُ منهمْ

ويُدْنيني إذا كَرِهوا جَناحي

ويُدْنيني إذا كَرِهوا جَناحي

It lets me keep my distance from them whenever I wish,

It stretches me out when I would fain be at rest,

and brings me near when they resent my wing.

And urges me on if they are averse to my wings.
