Did you think yourself steadfast? Yet had it depended

on your own steadfastness, you would not have stayed even briefly.

لكن من يستدفع البلوى به

لم يبغ عن أرض الحمى تحويلا

لم يبغ عن أرض الحمى تحويلا

But he through whom affliction is warded off

sought no departure from the sanctuary's land.

فأقام والطود الأشم إذا رسى

فأقام والطود الأشم إذا رسى

تخذت جوانبه الأسود نصولا

تخذت جوانبه الأسود نصولا

So he remained; and when the lofty mountain stands firm,

its flanks take lions as blades.

فلذا أقمت بظل حبر عائذ

فلذا أقمت بظل حبر عائذ

بضريح حامي الجار جيلا جيلا

بضريح حامي الجار جيلا جيلا

Thus you stayed in the shade of a scholar seeking refuge

at the tomb of him who protects neighbors, generation after generation,

حتى اذا انجلت الكريهة مثلت

حتى اذا انجلت الكريهة مثلت

منك الحماسة تستهل فصولا

منك الحماسة تستهل فصولا

until, when the ordeal had passed, there appeared

from you martial fervor, opening chapter after chapter.
