إن الصفات ثياب للذي لبسا
And so let the wise be of such character.
So let the virtuous be described as such,
Indeed, qualities are garments for whoever wears them.
For qualities are garments donned by their wearer.

Not everyone who stretches out a hand has a ring upon it
Not all who extend a palm are its ringed seal,
Of agate, and is a ravening lion.
Though the lion remains a predator.

The full moon is the full moon, even if shooting stars confront it.
The moon's a moon, though comets cross its face;
And brass is brass, even if they clothe it in lime.
Saffron's still saffron in a tunic of rags.

This is Abu al-Bahr, clad in worn garments—so if they were to ask...
This is the sea's father - ask if you please -
And have you seen a crossbred outrun a horse?
Did you ever see a hybrid outrace a steed?

Indeed, turbans are cotton, woven by a man.
Turbans are cotton, woven by a man.
And glory belongs to the head, whether bare or covered.
True pride is baring one's head, even clothed.
