A desire to ascend to where you are comes over me.

And longing for your fragrance returns to me.

Have I grown so used to you that I thought you part of me?

So yearning reveals to me the secret of your footsteps.

I camp near you wherever you are.

I know which deserts you have crossed,

    To which retreat you journey.

    At times, you are

Like time cracked between the fingers, opening an abyss out of nothingness,

Like betrayal, dragging its skirts, then dozing in the hypocrite's heart, down to the marrow.

Once, unyielding time aged its sorrows in you.

It said, 'Drink, O her beloveds.'

So I drank to the point of drunkenness.

Pour me sorrow again, my lord.

    Then do not forget me.

Make your rounds among the lovers, and do not forget me.

I shall drink until I see the face of certainty.

And the nights pass, erasing the blaze of joy from memories.

And mornings return, telling of the departure of loved ones,

Of the death of the rainbow.

Agonies have crucified you between your day and the night,

Between weeping over a faded ruin

And awaiting what the unseen has hidden.

You no longer care for the light.

You have shunned the light of Suhayl.

    The towering palm falls,

    So the shores yearn,

Lamenting their agonies to the stars.

Since I saw you in the grip of the wind,

    Withdrawing with the flood tide,

Breaking away with the ebb tide,

I built my hermitage at the edge of the dream and clung to the sea,

The last place of exile where I raised my banner.

It is time for the sea to purify itself,

Time for it to begin its seventh cycle.

Between love for you and fear of you, fear for you, lie two paths; the nearer is the guillotine.

So rejoice in the glad tidings, O you who are sent.

Storms will blow through everything mingled with water and clay.

The heart splits into two hearts,

And the face into two faces.

The masks fall in their nakedness.

The dream touched you, and the poem poured into your blood.

And your wishes trembled among the letters,

As the eagle is born at the summit of the impossible.

Will your sky one day witness the arrival of the sandgrouse,

So you give it drink from the river of your heart,

And it drives the raven's voice from the courtyards of your love?

Like a poem, a memory enters and distracts me for a moment from my sorrow.

It carries the heart from darkness like hell

To kingdoms of light and joy.

Childhood has a magic like the sweetest poems in the poets' creed.

Shall I clasp a memory to my heart and drown it in kisses,

    Or answer the poem's sorrows,

In the hope that its agonies may be complete?

This is the moment of sleep; it has caressed every eyelid.

Your kind peers have fallen asleep,

And the little stars have fallen asleep.

So sleep, that I may scatter some cares from my breast.
