Lightning traveled by night from Najd, stirring remembrance in me.

And drunkenness stirs in whoever drinks red wine.

I remembered a love at al-Ghuwayr and Ramah.

And can remembrance help once the matter is settled?

And can recollection bring near what separation has sent far away?

And can it bring back the days that Time has consigned to the past?

I remembered days at the sanctuary's gathering places,

And an age that passed—how lovely that age was!

Nights we spent, yet their memory has not ended,

And they had no fault save their brevity.

So we spent the night defying Time, stealing youth,

In the pupil of Time's eye, while Time slept.

And what have I to do with remembrance, when between me and it

Lie deserts, ruins, and barren valleys?

And what have I to do with those days? May their milk run dry!

Without them, an eye wept whenever a mouth smiled.

    And life lies only between what is coming and what has passed;

One half of it will pass when the other half has passed.

And life lies only between misery and blessing:

So at times it is sweet, and at times bitter.

Praise of the wise is enough for me in this world,

And love for close kin—that is glory and treasure.

So they traveled the sun's course, eastward and westward:

My radiant odes and my brilliant verses.

And the day of Ghadir has come to us bearing glad tidings,

Glad tidings greet it, and joy precedes it.

So take an ode whose openings include Dhuka, the sun,

And take a panegyric whose beauties include the full moon.

The secret of the unseen shone forth, and the veil was rent.

And God's command reached fulfillment, and excuse was cut off.

So tell those of understanding: Glad tidings! For there has come

A time in which guidance and joy are complete.

And tell those who harbor grudges: Ruin! For there has passed

An age in which error and evil prevailed.

For Islam has demolished what perdition built,

And faith has unraveled what unbelief bound fast.

And the fortune of right guidance has flourished, and blindness has been effaced.

And the proclamation has confirmed what the Reminder had declared before.

And upright truth has reached its rightful place,

And God's religion has been perfected, and the matter is clear.

And He named as commander the one who had become His Prophet's

Minister, and through him He had long ago strengthened the Prophet's back.
