    لَم يَمحُ جِدَّتَها ريحٌ وَأَمطارُ

    Hind's kin have a dwelling on Nafnaf's flanks;

Neither wind nor rain has effaced its freshness.

Do you not see me reclining beside the tent?

No maidens among the two clans entice me.

And many a haul of plunder, whose din deafens the men,

Have I brought back—indeed, some men are cowards.

Indeed, when an old man's infirmity is prolonged,

Then carrying him like a corpse is nothing but disgrace.

And whoever lives for a time among his kin, inept,

A burden to them whether they encamp or travel,

Will decry the bitterness of a life whose beginning was

Sweet—and time both sweetens and embitters.
