اعْلَى الْجَمَال تَغَار مِنَّا

مَاذَا عَلَيْك اذَا نَظَرْنَا

Is it over beauty that you are jealous of us?

The epitome of beauty, you make us envious

What harm does it do you if we look?

What is it to you if we glance?

هِي نَظْرَة تَنْسَي الُّوَقَار

هِي نَظْرَة تَنْسَي الُّوَقَار

وَتَسْعَد الْرُّوْح الْمَعْنَى

وَتَسْعَد الْرُّوْح الْمَعْنَى

It is a glance that makes one forget decorum

It is but a look that forgets dignity

And gladdens the tormented soul.

And gladdens the soul and its meaning

دِنْيَاي انتِ وَفَرْحَتِي

دِنْيَاي انتِ وَفَرْحَتِي

وَمُنَى الْفُؤَاد اذَا تَمَنَّى

وَمُنَى الْفُؤَاد اذَا تَمَنَّى

You are my world and my joy,

My world you are, and my joy

And the heart's desires whenever it wishes.

And the heart's wish when it desires

أَنْتِ الْسَّمَاء بَدَت لَنَا

أَنْتِ الْسَّمَاء بَدَت لَنَا

وَاسَتَعَصَّمّت فِي الْبُعْد عَنَّا

وَاسَتَعَصَّمّت فِي الْبُعْد عَنَّا

You are the sky that appeared to us,

You are the sky that appeared to us

And remained inaccessible, far from us.

And remained aloof in the distance from us

هَلَا رَحِمْت مُتَيَّمَا

هَلَا رَحِمْت مُتَيَّمَا

عَصَفَت بِه الاشوق وَهْنَا

عَصَفَت بِه الاشوق وَهْنَا

Would you not have mercy on a lovesick man,

Why not take pity on a lover

Whom longings have battered into weakness?

Whose passion and yearning tempest-tossed him

وَهَفَت بِه الذِكْرَى

وَهَفَت بِه الذِكْرَى

فَطَاف مَع الْدُّجَى مَغْنَى فَمَغْنّى

فَطَاف مَع الْدُّجَى مَغْنَى فَمَغْنّى

And memory carried him away,

And memory's winds blew him

So he roamed with the darkness, from dwelling to dwelling.

So he wandered, singing, a melody, a melody

هَزَّتْه مِنْك مَحَاسِن

هَزَّتْه مِنْك مَحَاسِن

غِنَى بِهَا لِمَا تَغَنَّى

غِنَى بِهَا لِمَا تَغَنَّى

Charms of yours stirred him;

Your charms made him drunk

He sang of them whenever he sang.

They suffice what his singing ecstasied

يَاشعلُه طَافَت خَوَاطِرَنَا

يَاشعلُه طَافَت خَوَاطِرَنَا

حَوَالَيْهَا وَطُفْنَا

حَوَالَيْهَا وَطُفْنَا

O flame, our thoughts circled

O flame, you set our thoughts roaming

Around it, and we too circled.

Revolving around you as we roamed

انْسِت فِيْك قَدْاسَه

انْسِت فِيْك قَدْاسَه

وَلَمَسَت اشَرّاقَا وَفَنَّا

وَلَمَسَت اشَرّاقَا وَفَنَّا

I sensed holiness in you,

We forgot in you a prayer

And touched radiance and art.

And touched an effulgence and passed away

وَنَظَرْت فِي عَيْنَيْك

وَنَظَرْت فِي عَيْنَيْك

افَاقَا وَاسْرَارّا وَمَعْنَى

افَاقَا وَاسْرَارّا وَمَعْنَى

And I saw in your eyes

And looked into your eyes

Horizons, secrets, and meaning.

Horizons and mysteries and meaning

وَسَمِعْت سِحْرِيَّا

وَسَمِعْت سِحْرِيَّا

يَذُوْب صَدَاه فِي الْاسْمَاع لَحْنَا

يَذُوْب صَدَاه فِي الْاسْمَاع لَحْنَا

And I heard something magical,

And heard a sorcery

Whose echo melts into melody in the ears.

Melting its echo in the ears a melody

نِلْت الْسَّعَادَه فِي

نِلْت الْسَّعَادَه فِي

الْهَوَى ورشَفَتِهَا دَنَا فَدَنَا

الْهَوَى ورشَفَتِهَا دَنَا فَدَنَا

I attained happiness in

I attained happiness in

Love, and sipped it, jar after jar.

Passion and sipped it slowly, slowly

قُيِّدَت حُسْنُك فِي

قُيِّدَت حُسْنُك فِي

الْخُدُوْد وَصُنْتُه لِمَا تَجَنَّى

الْخُدُوْد وَصُنْتُه لِمَا تَجَنَّى

You confined your beauty within

Your beauty was confined in

The cheeks, and guarded it when it grew cruel.

Cheeks and I protected it from what it hid

وَحَجَبْتَه فَحَجَبْت

وَحَجَبْتَه فَحَجَبْت

سِحْرَا نَاطِقَا وَحُجِبَت كَوْنَا

سِحْرَا نَاطِقَا وَحُجِبَت كَوْنَا

And you veiled it, thus veiling

And you veiled it, so you veiled

A speaking enchantment—and you veiled a universe.

A speaking sorcery and a universe was veiled

وَابَيْت الَا ان تُشَيَّد

وَابَيْت الَا ان تُشَيَّد

لِلْجَمَال الْحُر سِجْنَا

لِلْجَمَال الْحُر سِجْنَا

And you insisted on building

And refused that the beautiful and free

A prison for unfettered beauty.
