    Confide in silence, my enchantress.

Your silence is more eloquent than a thousand poems of verse,

than a thousand expressions of love,

    than a thousand conversations

between two close companions who met after parting.

Your silence is sweeter than a child's kiss,

    than a child's laughter,

than a bouquet of vision bearing an outpouring of peace.

  5. *******

    *******

    Enchantress of the sandy dream,

    Does this silence sprout cooing?

Can an ailing one heal the desert's thirst?

Your voice in silence astonishes me,

    your silence in a voice.

I read it—it does not know me.

    I adore it—it kills me.

I came to you, my tormentress.

My foot outruns me, and my blood carries me.

And I am a wanderer amid the folds of silence.

My fate is that I dream,

I build a palace of paper,

    I write poetry from sleeplessness,

    I sing from pain,

    I weep from joy.

    My fate

is that my roads have grown weary of my footsteps.

    My enchantress asks me:

Do you hear another silence like my silence?

She asks me, “Who are you?”

while my face is in her glance.

She asks me, “Who are you?” while my voice is in her tone.

She asks me, “Who are you?” while my language is in her letters.

She asks me, “Who are you?”

I, my lady, am a bird of sorrow that has forgotten grief.

I am the one who gave your eyes a gleam and radiance.

I am the one who set your lashes alight with longing and wishes.

I, if I have lived my life as an exile,

have indeed chosen your heart as my homeland.

I am a heart that longing has sent to you,

and a captive whom captivity has surrendered into your keeping,

and a slain one who weeps because of you, over you.

    I, my lady,

am accused of my heart's innocence since a moment of sincerity between your hands.

I, lady of the sandy dream,

am a sail the skiff disowned, so it hid from view,

    and a dove of the grove for which you chose imprisonment;

and if it lamented, you listened to it in delight.

It laments sorrow to its neighbor in melody,

and your speech, born of joy, embraces the shooting stars.

    Enchantress of the sandy dream,

and the opening of the time to come,

she asks me, “Who are you?” while my dawn is in her brow,

and my lifetime is upon her forehead.

The lady of the heart asks me:

    Is there in your heart

    an enchantress other than me?
