What is Eid? How can I shape the meaning of Eid?

Indeed, I have forgotten my instruments and my song.

What is Eid if no beloved chooses you,

Lifting away your sorrow in longed-for contentment?

What is Eid but to comfort one who weeps,

    Giving him solace without bounds?

What is Eid while pains sweep across the expanse,

Slaying the joy of our celebrated Eid?

What is Eid? The question shudders with its wound,

Between a false promise and a threat.

I whispered to it, so it recoiled, watching my tear,

And is jealous of my wound and of my sighing.

And when I complain to one who feigns love,

He comes with the face of a deceiver buried alive.

    هُمْ لَنْ يَجِيئُوا فِي اللِّقَا الْمَوْعُودِ

    And I am alone, waiting for loved ones;

They will not come to the promised meeting.

    لَنْ يَنْهَلُوا مِنْ كَأْسِي الْمَشْهُودِ

    They will not knock on the door shackled by sorrow;

They will not drink their fill from my well-known cup.

My dear friend, who is tender to me with his fragrance—

Nothing remains of him but a remnant of oud.

And when I wait for the departed one evening,

The ruins weep over lost love.

So for whom do I count the roses in the chambers of love,

And for whom do I repeat my birdsong in the evening,

While my lovesick letters moan and complain

Of my jailer’s tyranny and the violence of my chains?

A bewildered question still troubles me:

What is Eid? How can I shape the meaning of Eid?
