The keen swords of India, or casting cowrie shells?

And the pursuit of glory, or instituting innovations?

Do not allow injustice any right—do not.

Injustice destroys only what we abandon.

O companion on the road, do not heed one who

Took illusion for a companion and was deceived.

Take my heart: within it lies an ember.

I thought it slumbered on the fissure's eyelid.

It draws on sorrow, dims, blazes

Over a wound that widens whenever it narrows.

I have learned passion from its fierceness,

So I awakened love in the heart of anguish.

So wring sorrow from my eye today,

And wipe away the aches of overwhelming pain.

O my people, there was nothing between us

But a human thread—and it snapped.

I curse the stones in our taverns

Whenever a coward casts them and draws lots.

O companion on the road, I am an inspired one

Who raised the letter as a banner and rose.

And at my hunger's funeral, in my blood,

The melodies play the qanun of satiety.

So restore to me an idea by which I may survive,

And a ray that shines wherever it appears.

And ride the waves—this is my boat.

Do not tell me, 'That one gave or withheld.'

You are a coming promise that will not bend.

Let the people's hireling reap what he has sown.
