    The fortresses of the noble, O pickaxe!

    I am the unarmed man in revolt.

    They accused me of a crime that rends the heart

    and does to the breast what it does.

    أُحرّمُ بالحَرْفِ ما حَلّلوا

    And my only crime was that I

    declare forbidden through the written word what they made lawful;

    شَكَوْتُ إلى الله ما بَدّلوا

    and that, whenever they altered a verse,

    I complained to God of what they had altered;

    غَرفتُ وأطفأتُ ما أشْعَلُوا

    and that, whenever they kindled strife,

    I scooped up water and extinguished what they had kindled;

    and that, whenever they draped a cloak

    over injustice, I burned what they had draped.

    Am I to be bridled with embers for a good deed,

    while another is questioned for unbelief?

    And I was nothing but a tender heart

    that melted whenever the nightingale sang.

    And I took reason to such extremes that I became,

    through patience and forbearance, unable to reason.

    So, O friend, how can men be wronged

    and made to drink bitter sap when they set things right?
