دَعِيlet عِزّةَdignity النّفْسthe self ِتُنجيكِsave you مِنّيfrom me
فقدfor indeed ماتَdied بينbetween الضلوعthe ribs ِالحنينْlonging
Let self-respect save you from me.
Leave your pride, it won't save you from me
For longing has died between the ribs.
For yearning has died within my ribs
لقدindeed أنهكَwore out العُمرَlife فَرْطُexcess التمنّىwishing
وقلبُكِand your heart فىin جفوةٍcoldness لاnot يلينْsoftens
Too much wishing has indeed worn life out.
Life wasted away in futile wishing
And your heart, in its coldness, does not soften.
While your heart remains cold and unyielding
فأنَّىso how لقلبيfor my heart أنto يُسْتَرقَّbe enslaved
وأنىand how لقلبِكِfor your heart أنto يَسْتكينْyield
So how can my heart be enslaved?
How can my heart gently steal its way in
And how can your heart yield?
When your heart refuses to be stilled?
لقدindeed سقطَfell الحبُّlove منfrom راحتيكِyour two palms
وأنتِand you كماjust as أنتِyou لاnot تعلمينْyou know
Love has indeed fallen from your palms.
Love has slipped out of your hands
And you, just as you are, do not know.
And you, as you are, remain unknowing
