You won the caliphate over the one who aspired to it,

and whom the errant misleader had filled with hopes of it.

So he destroyed himself through folly and cowardice,

and not even a date-stone thread of it was allotted to him.

And men of greed supported him, and so they became

the torrent's flotsam, gathered together by floods.

They called upon Iblis when they lied and acted unjustly,

yet the faithless tempter did not come to their aid.

And they were his obedient followers; then he turned away,

and a band of them went along behind him.

And they had no rightful tenure in it, brief—

    following the misleader's footsteps—or long.

And it was not the people who bestowed it upon you; rather,

the Majestic King bestowed it upon you.

Muhammad's inheritance is yours, and you were

the roots of truth when the roots were banished.
