لَمّاwhen رأَيتُI saw الحادِثاتِcalamities كَنَفنَنيthey hemmed me in
لَمّا رأَيتُ الحادِثاتِ كَنَفنَني
وَأَورَثنَنيand they bequeathed me بُؤسىmisery ذَكَرتُI remembered أَباAbu (father of) الحَكَمْal-Hakam
وَأَورَثنَني بُؤسى ذَكَرتُ أَبا الحَكَمْ
When I saw that calamities had hemmed me in
When I saw what happened, it enveloped me
And bequeathed me misery, I remembered Abu al-Hakam,
And remembering Abu Al-Hakam brought me misery
سَليلَscion of مُلوكٍkings سَبعَةٍseven قَدhad تَتابَعواthey succeeded one another
سَليلَ مُلوكٍ سَبعَةٍ قَد تَتابَعوا
هُمthey المُصطَفَونَthe chosen وَالمُصَفَّونَand the purified بالكَرَمْby generosity
هُم المُصطَفَونَ وَالمُصَفَّونَ بالكَرَمْ
Scion of seven kings who had succeeded one another:
Descendant of seven successive kings
They are the chosen, and those purified by generosity.
They are the chosen ones, distinguished in generosity
