نَهانيforbade me ابنُson of الرَسولِthe Messenger عَنfrom المُدامِwine
وَأَدَّبَنيand schooled me بِآدابِin the manners of الكِرامِthe noble
The Messenger's son forbade me wine,
The Prophet's son has forbidden me from wine
And schooled me in the manners of the noble.
And taught me the manners of nobility
وَقالَand he said ليَto me اِصطَبِرbe steadfast عَنهاfrom it وَدَعهاand leave it
لِخَوفِfor fear of اللَهِGod لاnot خَوفِfear of الأَنامِhumankind
And said to me, "Abstain patiently from it, and forsake it,
He said abstain from it and leave it
For fear of God, not fear of humankind."
For fear of God, not fear of people
وَكَيفَand how تَصَبُّريmy patient abstention عَنهاfrom it وَحُبّيand my love
لَهاfor it حُبٌّa love تَمَكَّنَtook firm hold فيin عِظاميmy bones
And how can I bear abstaining from it, when my love
But how can I abstain when my love for it
For it is a love that has taken root in my bones?
Is a love that has penetrated my bones
أَرىI see طيبَthe goodness of الحَلالِthe lawful عَليَّto me خُبثاًfoulness
وَطيبَand the delight of النَفسِthe soul فيin خُبثِthe foulness of الحَرامِthe forbidden
I find the goodness of the lawful foul to me,
I see the perfume of lawful things as foul
And the soul's delight in the foulness of the forbidden.
And the perfume of the soul in the foulness of sin
