    فَما أَبكي عَلى الدَهرِ الذَميمِ

    O our neighbor at Dhū Nafar, stay;

for I do not weep over the blameworthy age.

Stay for the first part of your year, then depart,

with no neighbor lacking in protection or deserving blame.

For how many there are between al-Aqāriʿ and al-Munaqqā,

to Uḥud, to the environs of Rīm,

    to al-Jammāʾ—smooth cheeks,

clear in complexion, bearing no wounds,

and eyes whose inner corners are kohl-dark,

    without kohl, and slender waists!

    وَلَكِن لَم أَنَم أَنا لِلهُمومِ

    I lay sleepless, while the one who reproaches me was absent;

and yet I did not sleep, because of cares.

I lay sleepless, and pain within my heart wasted me away,

for Zaynab, or Umaymah, or Raʿūm.

I endure a night as long as a year, until

dawn appeared, its two-colored cord severed.

As though dawn were a piebald horse in fetters,

rearing and avoiding the blows of the bit.

I saw gray hair—upon us had descended

its terrors, with the argument of an upright man.

If you challenge it, you confront in it

the contention of one neither obstinate nor unjust.

And youth bade me farewell, leaving me

like one content with a small share of something great.

So leave what gives you nothing in return,

of neighboring women or the blackened traces of camps.

And utter words, striking their two joints cleanly,

with praise of the man of decisive judgment.
