مِنfrom الزَمانِtime وَشَرُّand the evil of الأَقرَبِthe nearest kinsman الواليthe close one
مِن الزَمانِ وَشَرُّ الأَقرَبِ الوالي
May God be ʿItiyy’s protector—a prayer made in fear—
God is the protector of the weak when they call
From time and the evil of the nearest, closest kinsman,
From the tyranny of time and evil kin though near
مِنfrom كُلِّevery أَحيَدَone who turns away عَنهُfrom him لاnot يُقَرِّبُهُhe draws him near
مِن كُلِّ أَحيَدَ عَنهُ لا يُقَرِّبُهُ
وَسطَamid النَجيِّthe confidants وَلاnor فيin المَجلِسِthe gathering الخاليthe private one
وَسطَ النَجيِّ وَلا في المَجلِسِ الخالي
From every man aloof from him, who will not draw him near,
All have turned from him, none draw him close
Among the confidants, nor in a private gathering.
Amid the saved, nor in the empty hall.
