أَرَسمُis the trace سَودَةَof Sawda مَحلbarren دارِسُeffaced الطَلَلِthe ruins
مُعَطَّلٌabandoned رَدّهُrendered it الأَحوالُthe passing years كالحَلَلِlike robes
Is Sawda's campsite barren, its ruins effaced,
I draw the image of Sowda, abode of the one who frequents ruins,
Abandoned, the years having made it like robes?
Frustrated, his state reversed like anklets.
لَمّاwhen رأىhe saw أَهلَهاher people سَدّواthey blocked مَطالِعَهاher approaches
رامَhe sought الصُدودَaversion وَعادَand became الوَدُّaffection كالمَهَلِlike molten metal
When he saw that her people had blocked the approaches to her,
When her people saw him they blocked his approaches,
He sought to turn away, and affection became like molten metal.
He aimed for rejection and love returned like a swollen she-camel.
وَعادَand became ودُّكَyour love داءًa malady لاno دَواءَremedy لَهُfor it
وَلَوand even if دَعاكَit summoned you طوالَthroughout الدَهرِall time للرحَلِto the saddle
And your love became a malady with no remedy,
Your love has returned as an illness without cure,
And even if it summoned you to the saddle throughout all time.
Even if it called you for life to pack up.
ماnot وَصلُunion with سَودَةَSawda إِلّاexcept وَصلُunion with صارِمَةٍa woman who severs ties
أَحَلَّهاlodged her الدَهرُtime داراًin a dwelling مأكلَa feeding ground for الوَعَلِthe ibex
Union with Sawda is only union with a woman who severs ties;
I don’t arrive at Sowda except the arrival at fierce Sareema,
Time lodged her in a dwelling where the ibex feeds.
Time has made it a land for foxes to eat.
وَعادَand became أَمواهُهاher waters سَدماًneglected وَطارَand flew لَهاtoward her
سَهمٌan arrow دَعاsummoned أَهلَهاher people للصّرمِto severance وَالعِلَلِand excuses
And her waters fell into neglect, and toward her flew
Its channels have become blocked and an arrow has flown for it
An arrow that summoned her people to severance and excuses.
Calling its people to illness and defects.
صَدّواthey turned away وَصَدَّand he turned away وَساءَand distressed المَرءَthe man صَدُّهُمُtheir rejection
وَحامَand he circled لِلوِردِto drink رَدهاًa rocky pool حَومَةَa circling العَلَلِthe second draught
They turned away, and he turned away; their rejection distressed the man.
They blocked off and the blocking of them did the man wrong,
And he circled a rocky pool to drink, circling for a second draught.
And he yearned for the rose, the intensity of defects.
وَحَلّؤُهُand they drove him away رِداهاًpools ماؤُهاtheir water عَسَلٌhoney
ماnot ماءُthe water of رَدهٍa rocky pool لَعَمرُby the life of اللَهِGod كالعَسَلِlike honey
And they drove him from pools whose water was honey;
And its being returned by him, its water is honey,
No rocky pool's water, by God's life, is like honey.
By God, the water of being rejected is not like honey.
دَعاcalled الحَمامُthe doves حَماماًdoves سَدَّshut مَسمَعَهُits hearing
لَمّاwhen دَعاهُcalled to it رآهُsaw it طامِحَaspiring الأَمَلِhope
The doves called to doves that had shut their ears;
The dove called a dove but it blocked its hearing
When they called to them, they saw them reaching high in hope,
When it called him, it saw him ambitious of hopes -
طُموحَthe yearning of سارِحَةٍa grazing beast حَومcircling مُلَمَّعَةٍdappled
وَمُمرعُand lush السِرِّthe valley's heart سَهلٌlevel ماكِدُunfailing السَهَلِthe plain
With the yearning of a grazing, circling, dappled beast,
Ambitions of a free woman, intense, smooth,
And the valley's heart is lush and level, its plain unfailingly fertile.
And the secret's confidant is easy, scheming easy.
وَحاوَلواand they tried رَدَّto reverse أَمرٍa matter لاno مَرَدَّreversal لَهُfor it
وَالصُرمُand severance داءٌa malady لأهلِfor the people of اللَوعَةِlove's anguish الوُصُلِfaithful in affection
And they tried to reverse a matter that admits no reversal.
And they tried to repel an order which has no repeal,
And severance is a malady for devoted lovers tormented by longing.
And estrangement is an illness for the people of passion and connection.
أَحَلَّكَhas placed you اللَهُGod أَعلىat the height of كُلِّevery مَكرُمَةٍnoble honor
وَاللَهُand God أَعطاكَhas granted you أَعلىthe loftiest of صالحِrighteous العَمَلِdeeds
God has placed you at the summit of every honor,
May God grant you the highest of every glory,
And God has granted you the loftiest of righteous deeds.
And God has given you the best of righteous work.
سَهلٌeasy مَوارِدُهُhis watering places سَمحٌgenerous مَواعِدُهُhis promises
مُسَوَّدٌmade chief لِكِرامِover noble سادَةٍlords حُمُلِforbearing
His watering places are easy to reach, his promises generous;
Its pastures are easy, its resting places spacious,
Made chief over noble, forbearing lords.
Blackened for the generosity of masters carried.
