إِذا لَم يَكُن عند امرىءٍ لي مُعوَّلُ

صفحتُ وَعاتبتُ الَّتي هيَ أَجمَلُ

صفحتُ وَعاتبتُ الَّتي هيَ أَجمَلُ

If I find no support in a man,

If a man has no one to rely upon

I forgive and reproach him in the most gracious way.

I forgive and blame the one who is most beautiful

أَخِفُّ بثقلي ما اِستطعتُ وَإِنَّما

أَخِفُّ بثقلي ما اِستطعتُ وَإِنَّما

أَدلُّ إِذا ما كانَ لي متدلّلُ

أَدلُّ إِذا ما كانَ لي متدلّلُ

I make myself as little a burden as I can, and only

I bear as much of my burden as I can, but

take liberties when someone takes liberties with me.

I only complain when I have someone to complain to
