فانso if مَعشَرٌa people بَخِلواthey were miserly وَالتوواand turned away
عَلىtoward ذيone possessing قَرابَتِهمkinship with them لَمdid not يُصبْsuffer harm
If a people are miserly and turn away,
A clan refused and turned away
From their kinsman, he will suffer no harm;
From their own kin - may they not prosper!
فَإِنَّfor indeed الإِلَهَGod كَفانيhas spared me الَّتيthat which
بِهمin them وَبسيبand through the bounty of بنيthe sons of المطَّلبْal-Muttalib
For God has spared me what
For God has been enough for me
Afflicts them—and done so through the bounty of the sons of al-Muttalib.
For them, and for the sons of Hashim.
وَكنتand I used to إِذاwhenever جئتُهُمI came to them راغِباًseeking bounty
مجيءَthe coming of المُصابِthe afflicted إِلىto المُحتَسبْone seeking God's reward
And whenever I came to them in hope,
Whenever I came to them in need,
As the afflicted comes to one seeking God's reward,
Like the afflicted seeking aid,
أَقرّواthey granted بِلاwithout خُلفbreaking a promise حاجَتيmy need
أَلاindeed مِثلُone like سائلهمone who asks them لَمdid not يَخِبْbe disappointed
They granted my request without breaking their word:
They never failed to grant my request -
Indeed, one like their supplicant has not been disappointed.
No beggar was refused by them.
