هَجوتI satirized الأَدعياءthose of spurious lineage فَناصبتنيso they opposed me
هَجوت الأَدعياء فَناصبتني
مَعاشِرَclans خِلتهاI thought them عَرَباArabs صِحاحاof sound descent
مَعاشِرَ خِلتها عَرَبا صِحاحا
I satirized those of spurious lineage, and was opposed by
The pretenders attacked me, though their company was pure Arabs.
Clans I had thought were Arabs of sound descent.
I said to them as they barked together against me, but I did not bark back:
فَقلتso I said لهمto them وَقَدand already نبحواthey barked جَميعاًall together
فَقلت لهم وَقَد نبحوا جَميعاً
عليَّat me فَلَمyet did not أُجِبI answer لَهُمُto them نباحاbarking
عليَّ فَلَم أُجِب لَهُمُ نباحا
So I said to them, when they had all barked
Are you of them, so I reject you,
At me, yet I did not answer them with barking:
And attribute you to their attributes openly?
أَأَنتُمare you منهمُof them فأصدَّso I should turn away عَنكمfrom you
أَأَنتُم منهمُ فأصدَّ عَنكم
وانسبُكُمand I ascribe you لنسبَتِهمto their lineage صَراحاopenly
وانسبُكُم لنسبَتِهم صَراحا
Are you of their number, that I should turn away from you
Or else praise my opinion, for I
And openly ascribe you to their lineage?
Remove from you the ugly son.
وَإِلّاand if not فاِحمدواthen praise رأييmy judgment فانيfor I
وَإِلّا فاِحمدوا رأيي فاني
أُزَحزِحُI drive away عَنكُمُfrom you الإِبنَthe blemishes القباحاthe ugly ones
أُزَحزِحُ عَنكُمُ الإِبنَ القباحا
Otherwise, praise my judgment, for I
And it is enough of a charge against good people
Drive the ugly blemishes away from you.
That you blame a brother for an invalid's crime.
وَحسبكand enough for you تهمةًas suspicion لِصَحيحِfor a sound man of قومٍa people
وَحسبك تهمةً لِصَحيحِ قومٍ
تَعُدُّyou count as عَلىover أَخيone afflicted with سقمٍillness جناحاa wing
تَعُدُّ عَلى أَخي سقمٍ جناحا
And for a sound man among his people, it is suspicion enough
To be reckoned a wing sheltering an ailing man.
