قَدindeed كُنتُI was أَحسبُنيI considered myself جَلداًresilient فَضَعضَعَنيand shattered me
قَبرٌa grave بِحَرّانَin Harran فيهِwithin it عصمَةُthe safeguard الدينِthe faith
I had thought myself strong, but I was shattered
I thought myself to be steadfast, but it shook me,
By a grave in Harran, wherein lies the safeguard of the faith.
A grave in Harran, in it the protector of the faith,
فيهِwithin it الإِمامُthe imam وَخَيرُand the best الناسِthe people كُلِّهِمُall of them
بَينَbetween الصَفائِحِthe slabs وَالأَحجارِand the stones وَالطيَنِand the clay
Within it lies the imam, the best of all mankind,
In it is the Imam and the best of all people,
Between slabs and stones and clay.
Between boards and stones and clay.
فيهِwithin it الإِمامُthe imam الَّذيwhose عَمَّتafflicted everyone مُصيبَتُهُthe loss of him
وَعيَّلَتand impoverished كُلَّevery ذيpossessor of مالٍwealth وَمِسكينِand pauper
Within it lies the imam whose loss afflicted everyone
In it is the Imam whose tragedy encompassed all,
And impoverished every wealthy man and every pauper.
And burdened every wealthy and destitute person.
إِنَّindeed الإِمامَthe imam الَّذيwho وَلّىdeparted وَغادَرَنيand left me
كَأَنَّنيas though I بَعدَهُafter him فيin ثَوبِa robe مَجنونِa madman
Indeed, the imam who departed has left me
Indeed the Imam who turned away and left me,
As though, after him, I were clad in a madman's robe.
As if after him I am in a madman's garb.
حالَchanged الزَمانُtime بِناfor us إِذwhen باتَspent the night يَعرُكُناkneading us
عَركَthe kneading of الصَناعِthe craftswoman أَديماًa hide غَيرَnot مَدهونِoiled
Time turned against us as it spent the night kneading us,
Time's situation turned against us when it stayed up harassing us,
As a craftswoman kneads an unoiled hide.
Harassing like an untreated leather worker.
وَأَعقَبَand regrew الدَهرُtime ريشاًfeathers فيon مَناكِبِهِits shoulders
فَماso it does not يَزالُcease مَعwith الأَعداءِthe enemies يَرمينيshoots at me
And Time grew new feathers upon its shoulders,
And fate succeeded in stabbing me in the back,
So it keeps shooting at me alongside my enemies.
So it continues to target me with the enemies.
فَرَحمَةُso the mercy اللَهِof God أَنواعاًin various forms مُضاعَفَةًredoubled
عَلَيكَupon you مِنas one مُقعَصٍslain outright ظُلماًunjustly وَمَسجونِand imprisoned
So may God's mercy, manifold and redoubled,
So may Allah's mercy be abundant,
Be upon you, unjustly struck dead and imprisoned.
Upon you, from an oppressed prisoner.
فَلاso not عَفاmay forgive اللَهُGod عَنfor مَروانَMarwan مَظلمَةًa wrong
لَكِنbut عَفاmay forgive اللَهُGod عَمَّنfor whoever قالَsaid آمينِAmen
So may God forgive Marwan no wrong,
May Allah not forgive Marwan's injustice,
But may God forgive whoever says 'Amen.'
But may Allah forgive whoever says "Amen".
