مُستَحصِدٌfirm and strong كَعُلاةِlike the anvil القَينِthe smith وَقَّرَهُmade him dignified
مُستَحصِدٌ كَعُلاةِ القَينِ وَقَّرَهُ
وَقعُthe impact الخُطوبِcalamities وَحالاتٌand vicissitudes وَمُختَبَرُand trial
وَقعُ الخُطوبِ وَحالاتٌ وَمُختَبَرُ
Firm as the smith’s anvil, given dignity by
Like scorpions lurking under stones he gathers
the blows of calamity, vicissitudes, and trials.
Misfortunes to assail me, griefs in ambush lie,
فيin الدِرعِarmor لَيثٌa lion وَفيand in النَكراءِdire peril داهيَةٌa shrewd strategist
في الدِرعِ لَيثٌ وَفي النَكراءِ داهيَةٌ
وَالأزمُand famine غَيثٌrain وَفيand in ناديِّهِhis assembly القَمَرِthe moon
وَالأزمُ غَيثٌ وَفي ناديِّهِ القَمَرِ
In armor, a lion; in dire peril, a shrewd strategist;
A lion in a coat of mail, a gryphon when attacked,
And in famine, rain; and in his assembly, the moon.
Fate is a rain cloud, and his club a moonlit sky.
