O herald, you summon me to make me hear
admonitions from Jamil, whose judgment is sound.

فَقَدfor indeed فهمتI have understood وسداand in vain (uncertain reading) لتسمعto make hear الاذنthe ear
Turn toward me with a face of yours I recognize;
for I have understood; in vain would you make the ear hear.
لاno وَالَّذيby Him who أَنتَyou منهfrom Him رحمَةٌa mercy نزَلَتdescended

No, by Him from whom you descended as a mercy,
whose fruits we hope for at the end of time:
لَقَدindeed أَتَيتُI was charged (passive reading) بِأَمرٍwith a deed ماnot شهدتُI bore witness لَهto it
وَلاnor تَعمُّدَهُintending it قَصديmy purpose وَلاnor سُنَنِmy way
I have indeed been charged with a deed I never witnessed,
nor was intending it my purpose or my way—
إِلّاexcept مقالةَthe talk of أَقوامٍpeople ذَويpossessing إِحَنٍgrudges
وَماand what is مَقالُthe talk of ذَويthose possessing الشَحناءِenmity وَالإِحنِand grudges
nothing but the talk of people bearing grudges.
And what is the talk of men of hatred and grudges worth?
لَمnot يُحسِنواmake favorable الظَنَّthe judgment إِذwhen ظَنّواthey judged بذيof one possessing حَسَبٍancestral honor
وَفيهمُand among them العذرُexcuse مَقرونٌis coupled إِلىto الطَبَنِshrewdness
They thought no good when they judged a man of noble lineage,
and in them excuse is coupled with shrewdness.
وَكَيفَand how أَمشيcan I walk مَعamong الأَقوامِthe people معتدلاًupright
وَقَدand indeed رميتُI have charged صَحيحَsound العودِtimber بالأبَنِwith knots
And how could I walk upright among men,
having charged sound timber with knots?
ماnot غيَّرَتhas marred وَجهَهُhis face أُمٌّa mother مقصِّرَةٌof lesser lineage

إِذاwhen القَتامُdust تَغَّشىenveloped أَوجهَthe faces of الهُجُنِthe ill-bred
No mother of lesser stock has marred his face
when dust shrouds the faces of the ill-bred.
وَكيفَand how يأَخُذُcould take مِثليone like me فيin تخيِّرِهِhis choosing

And how could one like me, when choosing, take
from among the clans someone held at a paltry price?
وَقَدand indeed صحِبتُI kept company وَجاورتُand lived beside الرِجالَthe men فَلَمand did not

I have kept men's company and lived beside them, and never
tired of brotherhood, betrayed, or broken trust.

And I have ever, by God, followed paths
of keeping faith, pursuing them from path to path.
ياO ابنَson of الفَواطمِthe Fatimas خَيرِbest of الناسِmankind كُلِّهِمall of them

O son of the Fatimas, noblest of all mankind
in lineage, and worthiest of triumph, not loss:

if you stand by me, then God will restore us;
and no restoration is ours if you do not.
وَماand not لَبستُhave I donned عِنانيmy reins فيfor مَساءتِكُمharming you

Nor have I donned my reins to cause you harm,
nor cast off my halter for treachery toward you.

وَطينَةٌand a clay لَمnot تقارِفhas touched هُجنَةَthe taint of الطِيَنِclays
And you are of Hashim, at the heart of its bowwood tree,
and clay untouched by the taint of mixed clays.
لَوif راهَنَتmade a wager with هاشِمٌHashim عَنover خيرِهاits finest رجُلاًa man

If Hashim wagered with a man over its finest,
your father would be the one singled out for the wager.
وَاللَهِby God لَولاwere it not for أَبوكَyour father الخَيرُthe noble قَدindeed نزلتwould have descended

By God, but for your noble father, there would have descended
from me verses upon men of baseness and weakness,

paring the bones and laying their knobs bare,
as a wooden slat is pared with knife and rasp.

إِذاwhen تَراخىstretches out المَدىthe course بالقرَّحِfor mature horses الحُصُنِthe stallions
You are the noble steed we summon, who catches up with us
when the course grows long for mature stallions.
فَماso not أُباليdo I care إِذاif ماindeed كنتَyou are ليfor me كَنَفاًa shelter

مَنwho صَدَّturns away أَوor بَتَّsevers مِنfrom أَقرانهِhis cords قَرَنيmy cord
So I care not, while you are my shelter,
who turns away or cuts my cord free from his own.

Nor do I care whether an enemy henceforth bears me malice,
or palm fronds jostle the solid rocks of Hadan.

جَدّاءُbarren صَرماءُmilkless لَمnot تصررhad its udder tied عَلىover أَبنِa defect
You are people's hope in their affairs when they are gripped by
a barren, milkless year, its udder not tied over a defect.

They find in you a fortress in which refuge is sought,
where sudden visitors seek shelter, its spear-thrust far-reaching.
