أَتَعذُرُdo you excuse? سَلمىSalma بِالنَوىfor the separation أَمor تَلومُهاblame her
وَسَلمىand Salma قَذىa mote العَينِthe eye الَّتيwhich لاnot يَريمُهاleaves it
Do you excuse Salma for the separation, or blame her?
Does Salma make excuses for her affection, or does she blame me?
And Salma is the mote that never leaves the eye.
Salma, apple of the eye I cannot see enough of.
وَسَلمىand Salma الَّتيthe one who أَبهَتdrained معيناًa flowing spring بِعَينِهِin his eye
وَلَولاand were it not for هَوىlove for سَلمىSalma لَقَلَّتwould indeed lessen سجُومُهاits tear-flow
And Salma is she who drained the flowing spring in his eye;
Salma whose eye has dazzled my eyes.
And were it not for love of Salma, the eye would weep less.
If not for love of Salma, her eyelids would not have swooned.

Her dwelling at al-Raqmatayn has faded away, and now
Her house is now empty with her departure,
Suwayqa there lies deserted, and its Nazim too;
Its kitchen now desolate and bare.
فَعدنَةُthen ʿAdna فالأجراعُthen the sandy flats أَجراعُsandy flats مَثعَرٍMathʿar

Then ʿAdna, then the sandy flats—the flats of Mathʿar:
Eden and thickets are now barren desert,
Its dwelling-sites are desolate; its rugged uplands are barren.
Its loves now empty wilderness.
أَجَدَّكَin all your earnestness لاnot تَغشىyou visit لِسَلمىbelonging to Salma مَحلَّةًa dwelling-place
بِسابِسَbarren wastes تَزقوcry out آخِرَat the end of اللَيلِthe night بومُهاits owls
Truly, you never visit a dwelling of Salma’s—
I see you do not visit Salma's place
Barren wastes where its owls cry at night’s end—
At dusk when the last birds twitter.
فَتصرِفُand you turn away حَتّىuntil تَسجُمَsheds العَينُthe eye عَبرَةًa tear

And turn away before the eye has shed a tear
Go until the eye overflows with tears
There, pouring freely, its tears quick to flow.
As she faints and her swoon draws near.
أَموتُI die إِذاwhen شَطَّتshe goes far away وَأَحياand I live إِذاwhen دَنَتshe draws near
وَتَبعَثُand stir أَحزانيmy sorrows الصِباthe east wind وَنَسيمُهاand its breeze
I die when she goes far away, and live when she draws near.
I die when she travels far and live when she comes near,
And the east wind and its breeze stir my sorrows.
My sorrows revived by the breeze and her scent.
