تَذَكَّرتُI remembered سَلمَىSalmā وَالنَوىand separation تَستَبيعُهاholds her captive
تَذَكَّرتُ سَلمَى وَالنَوى تَستَبيعُها
وَسَلمىand Salmā المُنىcherished desires لَوif only أَنَّناthat we نَستَطيعُهاcould attain her
وَسَلمى المُنى لَو أَنَّنا نَستَطيعُها
I remembered Salmā, as separation held her captive;
And Salmā is our heart’s desire—if only we could attain her.
فَكَيفَhow then إِذاwhen حَلَّتshe settles بأكنافِon the outskirts of مُفحِلٍMufḥil
فَكَيفَ إِذا حَلَّت بأكنافِ مُفحِلٍ
وَحَلَّand he settles بوعساءِon the soft sands of الحُلَيفِal-Ḥulayf تَبيعُهاher lover
وَحَلَّ بوعساءِ الحُلَيفِ تَبيعُها
How then, when she settles on the outskirts of Mufḥil,
And her lover settles on the soft sands of al-Ḥulayf?
