وروِّand quench عظاماًbones قصرُهُنَّtheir ultimate end إلىto بِلىdecay
Come, give me my cup to drink, and leave alone whoever refuses.
Come, pour me my cup and leave those who refuse,
And slake the thirst of bones whose end is decay.
And moisten bones whose abode tends toward decay.
فأَنّfor indeed نديميmy drinking companion غيرwithout شَكٍّdoubt مُكرَّمٌhonored
لديَّwith me وعنديand with me منof هواهhis desire الذيthat which ارتضىhe chose
For my drinking companion is, without doubt, honored
For my boon companion, undoubtedly honored,
By me, and with me he has whatever he desires and chooses.
Is with me, one whose love he has chosen.
ولستand I am not لهto him فيover فضلةِthe remainder of الكأسthe cup قائلاًsaying
لأصرعهُto knock him down سكراًwith drunkenness تحسَّsip! وقدwhen he has already أبىrefused
And I do not say to him, over what remains in the cup,
And I do not speak to him condescendingly
'Sip!'—to lay him low with drunkenness—when he has already refused.
Of the cup’s excess that would make him drunk against his will.
ولكنbut أُحييهI greet him واكرمُand I honor وجههُhis face
واشربand I drink ماwhat بقيremains واسقيهand I give him drink ماwhat اشتهىhe desires
But I greet him and honor his face,
Rather I entertain him and honor his dignity,
And I drink what remains and give him whatever he desires.
Drinking what remains and pouring him what he desires.
