I am the man you know when summoned to a raid,

To pierce livers and strike necks.

And when the north wind howls in a winter cold spell,

You know how I watch for a guest among my companions.

And when a night traveler seeks firelight, calling for dogs to bark,

My dogs bark and guide him to me.

They howl, urging him to hurry, then meet him,

Swatting him with the fringes of their tails,

Knowing I shall spill, by slaughtering a healthy beast,

The blood of a tethered young she-camel or an aged one.

So they almost—knowing what they have grown used to

From that—put me to shame with their welcome.
