حُيِّيتِ مِن دِمنَةٍ وَمِن طَلَلِ
O Suʿdā's dwelling, at the valley bend of Malal,
O home of my joy, in my sadness and grief,
greetings to you, blackened campsite and standing ruin!
I bid you farewell, from ruin and decline.

As for me, whenever the miser grants them safety,
Whenever the miser feels safe in you,
they spend the night silent, in fear of me.
You become, because of me, anxious and wary.

أَبتاعُ إِلّا قَريبَةَ الأَجَلِ
I do not let newly calved she-camels enjoy their calves, nor
I take no pleasure in long associations,
buy any but one whose death is near.
Nor do I seek any but short relationships.

May my sheep be granted no longer life,
In life I have no asset to extend for it
save to keep guests fed—nor my camels.
Except visiting settlements and no camels.

Many a she-camel's throat have I stabbed,
How many she-camels have I hamstrung
at the onset of a downpour—or a he-camel's.
At the first signs of old age or sickness.
