Greet the dwellings at Munshid, then al-Muntaḍā,
Oh dwellings of the past, greet them with a singer
then the plateau—the plateau of Rawāwatayn—as far as Laʾā.
Towards the two slopes of Ra`wah I set my course
لَعِبَtoyed الزَمانُtime بِهاwith them فَغَيَّرَand so altered رَسمَهاtheir traces
لَعِبَ الزَمانُ بِها فَغَيَّرَ رَسمَها
وَخَريقُهُand its fierce wind يُغتالُis assailed مِنfrom قَبلِthe quarter of الصَباthe east wind
وَخَريقُهُ يُغتالُ مِن قَبلِ الصَبا
Time toyed with them and altered their traces,
Time has played with them, changing their beauty
and its fierce wind is assailed from the east wind’s quarter.
Its ruins waylaid by the morning breeze
فَكأَنَّهاso it is as though they بَلِيَتhad worn away وَجوهُthe faces of عِراصِهاtheir courtyards
فَكأَنَّها بَلِيَت وَجوهُ عِراصِها
فَبَكَيتُthen I wept مِنout of جَزَعٍanguish لماat what كَشَفَlaid bare البِلىdecay
فَبَكَيتُ مِن جَزَعٍ لما كَشَفَ البِلى
So it seemed the faces of their courtyards had worn away;
As if their proud faces have withered over time
then I wept in anguish at what decay laid bare.
I weep in agony at their decay laid bare
