I nurture a long-held stock of poems, tending them

as a prudent man tends his stock for needs and caravans.

I offer enduring odes to the reciters,

    like embroidered robes among them:

either love verse, or praise of a man whose glory

endures, or provision against men of foolish speech.

Until, when their ears were filled with wonder

and the poems were held like honey in the people's hearts,

they swooped toward them, diving into their pastures,

though they had not bred the dams of those dry she-camels.

So they sought hobbles they did not use to tether,

and drove the gathered herd's riding camels among the strays.

I take no part in the mating of their stallion,

nor pasture alongside them on plain or mountain.

I never cease to see my brand and recognize it

in another's small herd, stamped upon the foreparts.

And I did not brand young she-camels while they grazed

until they came, despite the bonds and hobbles.
