وَلَمand did not أَتَنَحَّلِfalsely claim as my own الأَشعارَthe poems فيهاabout her
وَلَم أَتَنَحَّلِ الأَشعارَ فيها
وَلَمand did not تُعجِزِنيَprove beyond my power المِدَحُthe poems of praise الجيادُthe fine ones
وَلَم تُعجِزِنيَ المِدَحُ الجيادُ
And I did not pass off others’ verses as my own about her,
Nor did the verses in it come undone
Nor were fine poems of praise beyond my power.
Nor the praises of steeds leave me nonplussed
