إِنّيindeed I لَمَيمونٌsurely auspicious جِواراًas a neighbor وَإِنَّنيand indeed I
إِذاwhen زَجَرَtook omens from الطَيرَthe birds العِداthe foes لَمشومُsurely ill-omened
I am indeed an auspicious neighbor, and indeed I am
I am but a neighbour, protecting those near,
ill-omened when foes take omens from birds.
And when the predator threatens a bird, I pounce.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لمَلآنُsurely full العِنانِthe reins مُناقِلٌnimble-footed
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle وَنىfaltered يَوماًone day أَلَفُّa sluggish one سئومُeasily wearied
And I am indeed straining at the reins, nimble-footed,
With loosened reins am I, riding here and there,
when a sluggish, easily wearied one falters one day.
When a woeful day makes me seek out new friends.
فَوَدَّso wished رِجالٌmen أَنَّthat أُمّيmy mother تَقَنَّعَتveiled herself
بِشَيبٍwith gray hair يُغَشِّيshrouding الرأسَthe head وَهيَwhile she عَقيمُbarren
So men wished that my mother had veiled herself
If only my barren mother would be content
with gray hair shrouding her head, while still barren.
With a head turned grey that she did not bear.
