I feel as though, recalling what I suffer,
As if from remembering what I face
when the pitch-black night grows dark,
When the beastly night darkens

I were a snake-bitten man whose nearest kin have tired of him,
A sick man wearied of him, his kin abandoned him
and whom the healer and dear friend have bid farewell.
And his loyal friends bid him farewell
فَكَمfor how many بَينَbetween الأَقارِعِal-Aqāriʿ وَالمُنَقّىand al-Munaqqā

إِلى أُحُدٍ إِلى ميقاتِ ريمِ
For how plentiful, between al-Aqāriʿ and al-Munaqqā,
So from ravines to slopes
on to Uhud, on to the meeting place at Rīm,
To Uhud, to the appointed place of Rime

on to al-Jammāʾ, are cheeks with smooth
To arid sands from a flowing cheek
contours, and soft, gentle coquetry!
Whose passions have faded and from a gentle heart
