أَهَشَّmost eager إِلىfor الضَربِstriking بالذابِلِwith the slender spear
When it is asked, 'Which young man do you know
When asked, which young man have you known
is most eager to strike with the slender spear,
Who rushed into battle with his sword unsheathed
وَأَضرَبَand hardest-striking لِلقِرنِagainst the opponent يَومَthe day of الوغىbattle
وَأَطعَمَand most generous with food فيin الزَمَنِthe time الماحِلِdrought-stricken
and strikes his opponent hardest on the day of battle,
And struck mightily in the midst of the fray
and is most generous with food in times of drought?'
And shared his food in the leanest of times -
أَشارَتpointed إِلَيكَto you أَكُفُّhands الأَنامِhumankind
إِشارَةَthe pointing of غَرقَىdrowning people إِلىtoward ساحِلِa shore
People's hands point to you,
The hands of mankind point to you
as drowning people point toward a shore.
Like a drowning man pointing to the shore
