طَرَقَتshe visited by night عُلَيَّةُʿUlayya صُحبَتيmy companions وَرِكابيand my mounts
أَهلاًwelcome بِطَيفِto the phantom of عُلَيَّةَʿUlayya المُنتابِreturning repeatedly
ʿUlayya visited my companions and my mounts by night.
Ulayya visited my companionship and my mounts
Welcome to ʿUlayya’s returning phantom!
Welcome O specter of chosen Ulayya
طَرَقَتshe visited by night وَقَدand already خَفَقَhad shrouded العَتومُdeep darkness رِحالَناour saddles
بِتَنوفَةٍin a wilderness بَهماءَtrackless ذاتِfull of خَرابِdesolation
She came by night, when deep darkness had already shrouded our saddles,
She visited while our camel litters fluttered
In a trackless wilderness, full of desolation.
In Tanufa, a desolate ruin
فَكأَنَّماso it was as though طَرَقَتshe visited by night بِرَيّاwith the fragrance of رَوضَةٍa meadow
مِنfrom رَوضِthe meadows of عَوهَقَʿAwhaq طَلَّةٍdewy مِعشابِrich in grass
So it was as though she came bearing the fragrance of a meadow,
As though she knocked upon a perfumed garden
From ʿAwhaq’s meadows, dewy and rich in grass.
Of the gardens of 'Awahaq, a shaded pasture
