Be gentle with my heart; I have had enough of your estrangement.

And have mercy, for my eyelid spends the night awake.

I have come, with love calling me and driving me on,

and longing has kindled fires between my ribs.

I have come with tears streaming and pouring,

flowing in a flood from my ulcerated eyelid.

So have mercy on my tears; do not reject their intercession,

for tears sometimes intercede for lovers.

yet I have despaired and sought no solace!

My love for Taha is wondrous in its ways:

if [my despair] grows, the heart grows more yearning!

O master of creation, draw me close and quench my thirst,

and ask God to pardon and forgive me.

These sins of mine are grave; never do I remember them

without sorrows of every kind overwhelming me.

My master, O best of those whose intercession is hoped for,

if you intercede, all my sin becomes a light burden.

    ولم يُشَفِّعْ سِوَاكَ الله إنسانا

    So intercede, for you are the intercessor for all mankind;

God has accepted no human but you as an intercessor.

    knowledge, forbearance, sincerity, and faith.

You are the greatest of God's creatures in nobility,

and the purest of them in feeling and conscience.

and your guidance overflowed, guiding humankind and jinn.

You came when people were divided into sundered races,

their hearts overflowing with oppression and aggression.

So you set about erasing racial distinctions among them,

until you made them brothers in God.

You came when people were a strange sight in their religions:

one bewildered soul imitated another in polytheism.

So you arose, calling upon one God, the One,

Lord of heaven and Lord of earth, the All-Merciful.

You called them to worship God, and they became filled

with hatred, adding disbelief to disbelief.

Yet the unsheathed sword of unbelief did not frighten you,

nor did God's enemy, enraged, make you afraid.

And God strengthened you with signs that came swiftly,

and victory came hastening to you.

Conquest approached, its processions streaming forth,

and those who, but for you, would not have submitted, submitted to God.

and through God and Islam the lowly gained honor.

of the reins of speech and led it like horsemen.

When they composed verse, they enchanted; when they spoke in prose, they dazzled.

They were the eloquent, who brought forth Quss and Sahban.

Then God brought you the Qur'an as a miracle

that challenged the eloquent in refinement and mastery.

They said, 'It is poetry!' What is poetry beside chapters

that guide our two lives—this world and the next?

Truths flow freely in the Qur'an,

while poetry flows in fancies and meters.

They said, 'It is sorcery!' What is sorcery beside radiant verses

    Sorcery flows as fabricated delusions,

while these flow as guidance and discernment.

O my master, everything had lacked

its measure; then the Qur'an came as the measure.

what sorcery had conjured, serpent after serpent.

and restoring the dead to life as they had been.

The messengers each came with a miracle

that departed from the world when he departed.

But you came into the world with an enduring one,

a beauty that was the pupil of eternity's eye.

You were taken to the highest assembly, yet it has never ceased

to give life to and bring forth generations and ages.

My master, O lord of the world and its choicest soul,

come to our aid, for our world has drowned in evil.

Time has returned to what it was, sunk

in the Age of Ignorance, deceitful and treacherous.

And people have become as their age has become:

victims of vices, in souls and bodies.

They have returned to oppression and relished its pastures,

and their just man now chokes on justice.

And they have given themselves to wine; I have looked upon no gathering

without seeing a drunken woman and a drunken man there.

They give short measure when they measure, and when they weigh,

you see them filling the scales with loss.

They disregard even trusts; so if

you entrust a trusted man among them, he betrays you!

My master, we have committed every sin,

until we filled the book of our lives with disobedience.

We have committed our sins without shame,

until our very sins grew ashamed of us.

    أنتَ الشفيعُ لدنيانا وأُخْرَانَا

    So intercede for us, and ask the All-Merciful for forgiveness;

you are the intercessor for our life here and our hereafter.
