بَدا حينَ أَثرى بِإِخوانِه

بَدا حينَ أَثرى بِإِخوانِه

فَفَلَّلَ عَنهُم شَباةَ العَدَم

فَفَلَّلَ عَنهُم شَباةَ العَدَم

When he grew wealthy, he began with his brethren,

When he prospered with his brothers

and blunted poverty’s sharp edge for them.

He cast off from them the garments of oblivion

وَذَكَّرَهُ الحَزمُ غِبَّ الأُمورِ

وَذَكَّرَهُ الحَزمُ غِبَّ الأُمورِ

فَبادر قَبل اِنتِقال النِّعَم

فَبادر قَبل اِنتِقال النِّعَم

Prudence reminded him of the outcome of affairs,

Prudence reminded him of dire straits

so he hastened before blessings passed away.

So he hastened ere the gifts were gone
