وَعابَكِand they faulted you أَقوامgroups of people وَقالواand they said شَبيهَةresembling
وَعابَكِ أَقوام وَقالوا شَبيهَة
بِبَدرto a full moon الدُّجىthe dark night حاشاكِfar be it from you أَنto تشبهيyou resemble البَدراthe full moon
بِبَدر الدُّجى حاشاكِ أَن تشبهي البَدرا
Some people faulted you and said, “She resembles
the full moon of the dark night.” Far be it from you to resemble the moon!
لَئِنif indeed شَبَّهوكِthey likened you البَدرto the full moon لَيلَةon the night تمِّهof its fullness
لَئِن شَبَّهوكِ البَدر لَيلَة تمِّه
لَقَدthey certainly قارَفواcommitted الشَّنعاءَthe disgraceful act وَاِحتَقَبواand bore الوِزراthe burden of sin
لَقَد قارَفوا الشَّنعاءَ وَاِحتَقَبوا الوِزرا
If they likened you to the full moon on the night of its fullness,
they committed an outrage and took on the burden of sin.
أَيُشبِهdoes it resemble? بَدرa full moon آفِلٌsetting نِصفَhalf of شهرِهits month
أَيُشبِه بَدر آفِلٌ نِصفَ شهرِه
ضِياءًa radiance مُنيراًshining يَطلُعthat rises الشَّهرthe month وَالدَّهراand all time
ضِياءً مُنيراً يَطلُع الشَّهر وَالدَّهرا
Can a moon that sets for half its month resemble
a shining light that rises throughout the month and all time?
