O brother, I have seen no close friend among people

O friend whom I have not seen among people

Like him, more wondrous in estrangement and closeness.

One like him, so wondrous in estrangement and reunion

كُنتَ في أَول يَومي صَديقاً

كُنتَ في أَول يَومي صَديقاً

فَعَلى عَهدِكَ أَمسَيتَ أَم لا

فَعَلى عَهدِكَ أَمسَيتَ أَم لا

You were a friend at the beginning of my day;

You were on my first day a friend

So by evening, were you still true to your pledge, or not?

Yet by your covenant, did you not become a mother
