أَباO father of جَعفَرJaʿfar سُمتَنيyou subjected me to خُطّةa course of treatment
أَبا جَعفَر سُمتَني خُطّة
تَجاوَزتَyou overstepped فيهاin it وَلَمand did not تَعدِلact justly
تَجاوَزتَ فيها وَلَم تَعدِل
O Abu Jaʿfar, you subjected me to treatment
Oh Abu Ja'far, you have outlined a scheme for me
in which you overstepped and did not act justly.
In which you were unjust and did not act with fairness
وَخُبّرتَand you were told عَنabout قَولةan utterance قُلتُهاI said it
وَخُبّرتَ عَن قَولة قُلتُها
أَحرّhotter وَأَبرىand sharper منthan المُنصُلthe sword
أَحرّ وَأَبرى من المُنصُل
And you were told of an utterance I had made,
And you informed me of words I had said
hotter and sharper than a sword.
More burning and more innocent than streaming tears
تَوَهّمتَyou imagined فيهاin it خِلافيmy opposition عَلَيagainst (word continues)
تَوَهّمتَ فيها خِلافي عَلَي
كَyou (suffix completing the preceding word) وَماذاand what جَزاءthe reward الأَخthe brother المُفضِلthe generous
كَ وَماذا جَزاء الأَخ المُفضِل
You imagined in it my opposition to
You imagined I opposed you
you—and what is a generous brother's reward?
What should be the reward of a favored brother?
وَقلتand you said يرانيhe sees me بِعَينwith an eye of اِزدِراءcontempt
وَقلت يراني بِعَين اِزدِراء
وَفيand in قيمَةthe estimation of الأَوضَعthe lowliest الأَرذَلthe vilest
وَفي قيمَة الأَوضَع الأَرذَل
And you said, “He looks at me with contempt,
And you said he sees me with scornful eyes
and rates me as the lowliest and vilest,
And values me as the lowest of creatures
وَذلِكَand that أَنّيَthat I am منfrom جَبُّلJabbul
وَذلِكَ أَنّيَ من جَبُّل
فَلِمthen why قُلتَyou said ذاكَthat وَلَمand did not تَعجَلhasten
فَلِم قُلتَ ذاكَ وَلَم تَعجَل
and that is because I am from Jabbul.”
That is because I am from Jubail
Why, then, did you say that, though you were not in haste?
Why did you say that and did not wait?
هماthe two of them صلعةa bald patch أَناI فيin صَدرِهاits front
هما صلعة أَنا في صَدرِها
فَبَغدادfor Baghdad تَقربis close منto جَبُّلJabbul
فَبَغداد تَقرب من جَبُّل
The two are a bald patch, and I am at its front;
We both have a bald spot in our chests
for Baghdad is close to Jabbul.
So Baghdad is closer to Jubail
وَدَعand leave عَنكَfrom yourself ماwhat بَعدbeyond ماwhat تَستَريyou suspect (word continues)
وَدَع عَنكَ ما بَعد ما تَستَري
بcompletes the word meaning 'you suspect' وَعَدِّand turn away عَنfrom المُنكرthe objectionable المشكلthe obscure
ب وَعَدِّ عَن المُنكر المشكل
And set aside what lies beyond what you are suspicious
Leave off what is indecent after you conceal it
of, and turn away from what is objectionable and obscure.
And turn away from the problematic unknown
وَأكِّدand reaffirm شَريطَةthe agreed condition ماwhat بَينَناis between us
وَأكِّد شَريطَة ما بَينَنا
بِقَولwith a statement منof الحَقّthe truth مُستَقبَلforthcoming
بِقَول من الحَقّ مُستَقبَل
And reaffirm the pact between us
And affirm the bond between us
with a forthcoming word of truth.
With words of truth in the future
