Love for Ahmad has already spread

between the ribs and the inward parts.

    He sways in his movements

like a slender branch when he walks.

His cheeks are of the coolness of night,

and his two eyes are a young gazelle's.

When I won union with him

and obtained from him whatever I wished—

the sweetest of all creation—or is there

a veil over the eye of one who loves?

And the watcher's eye feigned sleep

to spur on the cups of tale-bearing.

And talk of our love spread,

and love grows lovelier if it spreads.

The tale-bearers meddled with our union

out of envy—so shame on whoever told tales!
