Indeed, I went abroad, hoping to gain wealth,

and I was not the first young man to leave his homeland.

So if I return without any gain,

then I am not the first to miss what he sought.

And how can sustenance be mine, or how can it be brought

by striving, if God has provided no means for it?

Had my Lord willed, we would have stayed in our homelands,

until He drove our sustenance to us, bringing it in,

and brought sustenance in ease and repose,

and we would not have endured journeys and toil for it.

Whatever we are allotted will seek us out,

and we cannot pursue what has already passed us by.

If I remain unscathed in honor, never staining it,

then I do not care whether sustenance comes or goes.
