I was bereaved of a precious treasure of this world.
My precious soul detached itself from this world, and I grieved for it,
Death reached him in the arena of fate.
Fate in its whims led it astray,
أَأَنزَلتكَdid ... bring you down? المَناياdeath أَمor نَزَلتَyou descended بِهاupon it
أَأَنزَلتكَ المَنايا أَم نَزَلتَ بِها

وَكانَ بَيتُك بَين الشَّمسِ وَالقَمرِ
Did death bring you down, or did you descend upon it,
Did death bring you down, or did you descend to it?
Though your home stood between the sun and the moon?
While your home was between the sun and the moon,

Alas for death! Do its arrows never cease
Alas, death, do your arrows never cease,
To hang at the breast of the bow and bowstring?
Suspended on the bowstring and chord?
