He carries affairs through by his ready intuitions,

And his reflection shows him their consequences.

So he keeps sending them forth and bringing them in,

Thus encompassing the present and the absent among them.

So when a difficult matter arises and refuses

To be led, he is its master,

The one who bears it unaided, though it has sunk deep

And kept its seeker waiting, day after day.

You governed the caliphate when you took your stand for it,

So you protected it and defended its flank.

And you set it straight with justice, so it stood upright,

And you embraced those who sought it and those who feared it.

A pardon with which you covered all its offenses,

And bounty with which you kindled its aspirations.

And when wars rage beyond bounds, you send against them

A judgment by which you shatter their battalions,

A judgment—when swords fail to bite, onward goes

Resolve through it, healing their striking edges.

It brings one faction its turn of fortune,

And in another sets up its mourning women.

And when troubles take root and stand firm,

    His bounties demolish their calamities,

Until their vicissitudes return as blessings,

Their killing grounds become their encampments.

And when his hand moves in accord with his intent,

The world reveals its virtues to him.
