غَشِيَتْنِيenveloped me مِنَof الهُمُومِsorrows غَواشِshrouds
لِعَذُولٍbecause of a reproacher يَلُومُreproaches فِيكَover you ووَاشِand a talebearer
Shrouds of sorrow have enveloped me,
The sorrows have overwhelmed me, clouding my mind,
because of a reproacher who blames me for loving you, and a talebearer.
For a critic who blames you while I pine and wish.
لَوْif only يُلاَقواthey could experience الَّذِيwhat لَقِيتُI have suffered مِنof الْوَجْlove’s anguish (word continued)

If only they felt the anguish of love that I have felt,
If only they felt what I feel of passion's sting
from longing rising within my ribs.
Between ribs that ache from the fires that burn inside.
نَمَّtattled بِالسِّرِّabout the secret عِنْدَهُمْin their presence دَمْعُtears عَيْنِيof my eye
إِنَّindeed سِرَّthe secret المُحِبِّof the lover بِالْدَّمْعِthrough tears فَاشِيrevealed
The tears of my eye betrayed the secret to them;
My tears betray my secret love before them.
indeed, a lover’s secret is revealed through tears.
For a lover's hidden truths are exposed when he cries.
مَنْwho عَذِيرِيmy defender لظَالِمٍagainst a cruel one أَنَاI مِنْهُfrom him

Who will take my part against a cruel one, whose
Who can blame me for the unjust one I desire?
abandonment I fear even in the time of union?
I fear the time of union and dread its demise.

He took his stature from a supple bough,
He has captured my soul with his sweet glance,
and mirrored the eyes of thirsty gazelles.
And told of eyes thirsty as female mountain goats.
