معوِّدتيyou who accustom me الغفرانَforgiveness لِلذَّنبfor the fault وَالرِّضىand favor
أَسَأتُI have done wrong فُقوليso say قَدindeed وَهبتُI have forgiven لَكَfor you الذَّنباthe fault
My tormentress, grant pardon for my sin—and your favor;
You who have accustomed me to forgiveness for my faults and to favor,
I have wronged you; so say, “I have forgiven your offense.”
I have done wrong; so say, “I have forgiven you your fault.”
فَماfor ... not كانَwas ماwhat بُلّغتِyou were told إِلّاexcept تَكذّباa fabrication
وَلكِنّand yet إِقراريmy admission بِهof it يَعطِفsoftens القَلباthe heart
For what you were told was nothing but falsehood;
For what you were told was nothing but a lie,
but my confession of it softens the heart.
Yet my admission of it softens the heart.
فَماfor ... not العَينthe eye مِنّيof mine مُذsince شَخصتِyou departed قَريرَةًat ease
وَلاnor الأَرضُthe earth أَوuntil تَرضَينyou are pleased تَقبَلreceives ليfor me جَنباa side
Since you departed, this eye of mine has known no cool repose,
For my eye has known no peace since you departed,
nor, until you are pleased, will the earth receive my side.
Nor will the earth receive my side until you are pleased.
