The All-Merciful established, with radiant good fortune,

An enduring reign that shall never end,

For Abu al-Abbas—freely brought to him

    By God's decree—the chosen imam.

A reign all humankind hopes for,

Which none hates when it is mentioned.

The face of kingship was blackened; now

It has met the gaze with a white face.

O God's trusted one, O you whose bounty,

If my fate trips up my fortune, lifts me up.

Overwhelming longing and the loss of favor

Have consigned my body to a grief that sickens.

My fortune, through you, was coming toward me,

Then turned from that course with an averted face.

Time lent my youth a touch of gray,

Which I had not sought from any lender.

The gray steeds have no one, when they race the

Black steeds in passion's race, to tame them.

My soul grieved for my closeness, which

Had been my aim since the day of my striving.

A servant of yours, since you left, has been struck by what

Consigned his body to a wasting illness.

    لاَ يَرُدُّ النَّاسُ أَمْراً قَدْ قُضِي

    Separation was decreed for him against his will;

People cannot reverse a matter already decreed.

Each day a sword of harm is drawn,

With lies against you, by one who unsheathes it.

He does not care, since he has seen his hopes in you,

Whether Time is angry with him or pleased.
