وَلَمand did not تدرknow (she) يَومon the day of البَينparting أَنّيthat I وَأَنّهاand that she
وَلَم تدر يَوم البَين أَنّي وَأَنّها
أَشَدّmore intense اِكتِئاباًdespondency بِالفراقِat separation وَأَوجَعand more pained
أَشَدّ اِكتِئاباً بِالفراقِ وَأَوجَع
And she did not know, on the day of parting, that I and she
You knew not on the day we parted, that I and she
Were more despondent at separation, and more deeply pained.
Would be more sad and sorrowful for the farewell.
جَرَتflowed عَبرَةٌa tear مِنهاfrom her وَأذريتُand I shed عَبرَةa tear
جَرَت عَبرَةٌ مِنها وَأذريتُ عَبرَة
وَحالَتand intervened جُفونeyelids بَينَbetween ذلِكthat تَدمَعshedding tears
وَحالَت جُفون بَينَ ذلِك تَدمَع
A tear flowed from her, and I shed a tear,
Tears flowed from her, while I let fall tears,
And eyelids, shedding tears, stood in the way of that.
And eyelids were between this flowing wet.
وَرُمناand we sought وَداعاًa farewell فَاِستَمَرّتthen continued onward بِناwith us نَوىًseparation
وَرُمنا وَداعاً فَاِستَمَرّت بِنا نَوىً
قَذوفٌfar-flung وَبعضand some النَأيdistance لِلشَّملfor reunion أَجمَعmore uniting
قَذوفٌ وَبعض النَأي لِلشَّمل أَجمَع
And we sought a farewell, but separation carried us onward,
We said farewell, but intentions pulled us together,
Far-flung—yet some distance brings us closer together.
Like flint stones, though separated, strike spark and fire.
