وَماand not لَبِسَwore الأَقوامُthe peoples ثَوباًa garment مِنَof الهَوىpassion
وَما لَبِسَ الأَقوامُ ثَوباً مِنَ الهَوى
وَلاnor جَدَّدواthey renewed إِلّاexcept الثِّيابَthe garments الَّتيthat أُبليI wear out
وَلا جَدَّدوا إِلّا الثِّيابَ الَّتي أُبلي
And no people have worn a garment of passion,
And never have the people worn a garment of passion
Nor renewed any but the garments I wear out;
Nor have they donned any robes but those I've worn threadbare
وَلاnor شَرِبواthey drank كَأساًa cup مِنof الحُبlove حُلوةsweet
وَلا شَرِبوا كَأساً مِن الحُب حُلوة
وَلاnor مُرَّةًbitter إِلّاexcept وَشُربهمand their drink فضليmy leavings
وَلا مُرَّةً إِلّا وَشُربهم فضلي
Nor have they drunk a sweet cup of love,
Nor have they sipped a sweet cup of love
Nor a bitter one, without their drink being my leavings.
Without my draught preceding theirs
